Personal & Professional Development
It means so much to see our Participants grow in skills, confidence, employment, and importantly, to feel a sense of community around them.
- 100% of employed Participants reported feeling more confident since working for Redemption Roasters, which shows how important our support can be for the personal development of our Participants.
- 93% of Participants reported that they have a community of people supporting them. We are really proud that through our barista training both in-prison and the community, and through the support offered by our shop staff and impact team, that we have successfully built a positive sense of community to support our Participants through the transition into sustainable employment.
Roastery
All of Redemption’s coffee is roasted at our roastery inside HMP The Mount, a Category C men’s prison. Our resident Trainees* experience a maximum time out of their cell in a positive working environment, alongside our full-time roastery team. Here, the Trainees are taught the practical skills involved in the roasting, production, and logistics of coffee.
In a 2021-22 inspection, only a quarter of male prisons received a positive rating for purposeful activity for work, so we are proud to be able to support prison residents through our roastery.
As well as employment inside the prison, we also aim to support our roastery Trainees into further employment when they are released from prison.
Definitions
Participants: Our Participants are people who have lived experience of the Criminal Justice System: this means they may have previously served time in prison, have a criminal conviction or are individuals ‘at risk of offending’*.
'At risk of offending': Some of our Participants are defined as ‘at risk of offending’; meaning they have lived experience, or are reasonably suspected of having lived experience, of key factors linked to offending behaviour. These people are often referred to us by organisations working towards reducing criminal behaviour.
Trainees: Our Trainees are prisoners at HMP The Mount, who work alongside our full-time team at our roastery.
