ABOUT

The Block is seasonally blended to hit notes of milk chocolate, praline, and raisin all year round.

Our classic espresso blend The Block has notes of milk chocolate, caramel and hazelnut, with a little dried fruit sweetness reminiscent of raisins and is sourced from Brazil and Mexico. Its rich, creamy body makes for a delicious espresso both with and without milk.

The Brazilian component comes from Ipanema Coffees which is located in Brazil's renowned Minas Gerais region and is one of the world’s leading coffee producers, known for its exceptional quality and innovation. With diverse microclimates and altitudes, Ipanema farms produce a wide range of flavor profiles, from fruity and floral to rich and chocolaty. Committed to sustainability, Ipanema holds certifications like Rainforest Alliance and UTZ, implementing eco-friendly farming practices and supporting biodiversity. Through precision agriculture and innovative processing methods, they ensure consistent, high-quality beans, from commercial to specialty-grade. Dedicated to social responsibility, Ipanema invests in local communities, providing education, healthcare, and fair working conditions for its employees.

Our Mexican component, Las Cotorras, is grown in the highlands of Chiapas, near the El Triunfo Biosphere Reserve. This region is home to the Cotorras, a striking bird species that has come to symbolize authenticity and freedom. These birds find their ideal habitat on the coffee farms that produce this exceptional coffee. The area is a unique convergence of northern and southern species, drawn to its rich natural environment. The El Triunfo Biosphere covers nearly 120,000 hectares and protects one of Central America’s last cloud forests. The forest’s condensation supports a diverse range of plant and animal life. This coffee is fully washed and fermented for 20-24 hours on each farm, before being sun-dried on raised African beds and concrete patios to get ready for export.

ETHICAL COFFEE SOURCING

Just like our approach to roasting and training, we source coffee in such a way that prioritises empowering people who are disadvantaged or disenfranchised.

Every sourcing decision is made intentionally in order to maximise the impact for the producers. We are proud to say that 94% of all the coffee we sold last year hit at least 1 of these 3 key sourcing principles, our goal for 2025 is to increase this to 100%.

REHABILITATION

In line with our mission in the UK, we support the rehabilitation of coffee producers previously involved in conflict, crime or the drug trade.

We’ve been working with a project in Colombia which supports farmers who were previously members of paramilitary groups, and want to move away from growing illegal plants for the drugs industry and instead produce coffee. This allows them to have a steady, sustainable income which provides for their family and creates stability within their community.

Sustainable Initiatives

Economic and environmental sustainability are important issues at every stage of the coffee supply chain.

We work with Caravela, who on top of paying farmers up front, have an on-the-ground team to work with farmers improving their farm yield and reduce carbon emissions.

We also work closely with Raw Material CIC, who reinvest all profits at origin.

Female Economic Empowerment

We support the promotion of female coffee producers to improve gender equality in the industry. Women do most of the coffee field labour but rarely hold positions of power and we want to reset the balance.

We’ve built a relationship with Patricia Coelho, a female producer in Brazil, to create our house espresso blend, The Block. Now one of our bestsellers, the volume of coffee we’re purchasing from Patricia is helping her to invest resources into quality and processing to focus her efforts on the speciality market.
