Bergamot, Jasmine, White peach

Founded in 2020, Majarane Agricultural Cooperative was set up by producer Namwana Muvunga Feza to encourage more women to be vocal in the coffee sector. Made up of 500 producers, 44% of whom are women, Majarane Agricultural Cooperative aids women in understanding their role, their rights, and their value in the coffee industry. Women receive training in trades like soap making, tailoring, literacy improvement, learning financial autonomy, and involving women in marketing the cooperative’s products.

This lot from the Democratic Republic of Congo, grown between 1,485 and 2,186 metres on the shores of Lake Kivu, delivers tasting notes of jasmine, bergamot, and white peach. These flavours layer together to deliver an aromatic, early grey-like lift, rounded out with a honeyed, stone fruit sweetness.

ABOUT

Founded in 2020, Majirane Agricultural Cooperative was set up by producer Namwana Muvunga Feza to encourage more women to be vocal within the coffee sector.

After a surge in growth since the first lot was sold in 2022, the infrastructure of the cooperative has expanded rapidly, with coffee seeds and new trees now distributed to members. This distribution can be attributed to two reasons: increasing production and reforesting land affected by climate change. The cooperative's mission is to expand and improve coffee farming in a community that had neglected it for decades, and to make the case that coffee is a key factor in tackling questions of the economy and the environment.

This lot, grown between 1,485 and 2,186 metres on the shores of Lake Kivu, delivers tasting notes of jasmine, bergamot, and white peach. Combined, these flavours layer together to deliver an aromatic, early grey-like lift, rounded out with a honeyed, stone fruit sweetness.

METHOD

We've been loving brewing this coffee as a pour over. You'll want to use 93 degree water with the above dose. Firstly, pour a little hot water through the dripper and filter paper to get everything nice and warm. We use a 60g per litre ratio for this coffee. For the bloom phase, you'll want to do three pours in circular motions, allowing the excess CO2 to bubble away, and evenly coating all the coffee grounds. You'll want to aim for a total brew time of 2:30 - 3 minutes to get the best out of this single origin coffee.

Sourcing Principles

ETHICAL COFFEE SOURCING

Just like our approach to roasting and training, we source coffee in such a way that prioritises empowering people who are disadvantaged or disenfranchised.

Every sourcing decision is made intentionally in order to maximise the impact for the producers.
We focus these decisions around 3 main principles:

REHABILITATION

In line with our mission in the UK, we support the rehabilitation of coffee producers previously involved in conflict, crime or the drug trade. We’ve been working with a project in Colombia which supports farmers who were previously members of paramilitary groups, and want to move away from growing illegal plants for the drugs industry and instead produce coffee. This allows them to have a steady, sustainable income which provides for their family and creates stability within their community.

Sustainable Initiatives

Economic and environmental sustainability are important issues at every stage of the coffee supply chain.

We work with Caravela, who on top of paying farmers up front, have an on-the-ground team to work with farmers improving their farm yield and reduce carbon emissions.

We also work closely with Raw Material CIC, who reinvest all profits at origin.

Female Economic Empowerment

We support the promotion of female coffee producers to improve gender equality in the industry. In an industry where women do most of the labour but rarely hold positions of power, we want to help reset the balance. We’ve built a relationship with Patricia Coelho, a female producer in The Pinhal Region in Brazil, to create our house espresso blend, The Block. We now do a lot of business with Patrica, giving her the capital to invest in producing better and better coffee and thereby access the speciality market. 2023 marks our third year working with Patricia.
