This coffee is a vibrant container-sized blend from the high-altitude micro-regions surrounding Jaén and San Ignacio, in northern Peru. We chose this lot because it masterfully showcases the collective skill of smallholder farmers in the Cajamarca region. 

Crafted from approximately 18 tonnes of exportable green coffee, it brings together parchment from numerous producers farming just 1–2 hectares each. The largest contributor is Roger Chilcon Flores from Finca El Diamante. Dominated by classic varieties like Caturra and Catuai, the coffee is carefully hand-processed on each farm before being delivered to our Jaén warehouse. There, it undergoes rigorous grading and cupping, ensuring this blend truly represents the best of the region's harvest.

ABOUT

This lot is a container-size blend built from multiple small micro lots delivered to the warehouse in Jaén during the peak of the harvest. It brings together parchment made by smallholder producers farming 1–2 hectares each, who typically produce around 20–25 quintales of coffee per hectare. Together, these lots make up roughly 18 tonnes of our exportable green coffee, with Roger Chilcon Flores from finca El Diamante, San Ignacio the largest contributor.
The coffee comes from producers in the high-altitude areas around Jaén and San Ignacio in the Cajamarca region of northern Peru. By number of bags, the main contributing microregions are San Ignasio, Huabal, Chirinos, with complementary volumes from Pomahuaca, Churuyacu and Santa Rosa. The region’s rich volcanic soils, tropical rainfall and ideal climate create significant potential for high-quality Arabica coffee.
This container is dominated by classic northern Peruvian varieties, with Caturra and Catuai forming the backbone of the profile. These are supported by Pache and Bourbon, along with smaller volumes Typica, and Marsellesa.
These smallholder producers harvest coffee during the middle of the season and process it on their farms using hand-pulping machines, fermentation tanks and patios or raised beds for drying. Once processed, the parchment coffee is delivered to the warehouse in Jaén, where it undergoes grading, moisture testing, roasting and cupping with a small warehouse and QC lab in Jaén. To help producers improve drying practices, with installed facilities near the warehouse to ensure optimum moisture levels and preserve cup quality. Farmers delivering their parchment coffee receive immediate quality analysis, a cup score and an offer price.

ETHICAL COFFEE SOURCING

Just like our approach to roasting and training, we source coffee in such a way that prioritises empowering people who are disadvantaged or disenfranchised.

Every sourcing decision is made intentionally in order to maximise the impact for the producers.
We focus these decisions around 3 main principles:

REHABILITATION

In line with our mission in the UK, we support the rehabilitation of coffee producers previously involved in conflict, crime or the drug trade. We’ve been working with a project in Colombia which supports farmers who were previously members of paramilitary groups, and want to move away from growing illegal plants for the drugs industry and instead produce coffee. This allows them to have a steady, sustainable income which provides for their family and creates stability within their community.

Sustainable Initiatives

Economic and environmental sustainability are important issues at every stage of the coffee supply chain.

We work with Caravela, who on top of paying farmers up front, have an on-the-ground team to work with farmers improving their farm yield and reduce carbon emissions.

We also work closely with Raw Material CIC, who reinvest all profits at origin.

Female Economic Empowerment

We support the promotion of female coffee producers to improve gender equality in the industry. In an industry where women do most of the labour but rarely hold positions of power, we want to help reset the balance. We’ve built a relationship with Patricia Coelho, a female producer in The Pinhal Region in Brazil, to create our house espresso blend, The Block. We now do a lot of business with Patrica, giving her the capital to invest in producing better and better coffee and thereby access the speciality market. 2023 marks our third year working with Patricia.
