Chocolate, Caramel, Apricot

Half the caffeine, all the character. Our Half Caff blend combines the caffeinated and decaffeinated versions of Sembradores de Vida, a coffee from Ortega, Cauca, that represents coffee's ability to create change.

The name translates to 'Sowers of Life.' In a region historically shaped by conflict and coca production, this association gives farmers a better option: training, education, direct market access, and a path toward stability. The goal isn't exclusion, but rather it's making coffee the obvious choice. We've worked with this group for five years, and the quality improves with every harvest. The decaf portion is processed in Colombia using ethyl acetate, preserving value at origin and character in the cup.

The resulting blend gives chocolate, caramel, and apricot notes.

ABOUT

Some people want less caffeine, but not zero. They want a coffee that lets them have another cup without the jitters, and a brew that works for the afternoon as well as the morning. Introducing our first Half Caff - a 50/50 blend of the caffeinated and decaffeinated versions of Sembradores de Vida, and a coffee that has become one of the most meaningful partnerships on our menu.

The coffee originates from the municipality of Ortega, in Colombia's Cauca region. This area has historically been shaped by devastating conflict and illicit drug production. For years, farmers here had few options, and coffee offered one of the only paths to stability. Without market access and technical support, it was a precarious solution, until the introduction of Asociación Sembradores de Vida.

The name translates to "Sowers of Life," and the project is built on a belief that echoes our own at Redemption Roasters: rehabilitation is real. Ruben, a representative of the association, puts it plainly:

"The region of Ortega, Cauca has been traditionally producing coffee, but also has had presence of illegal groups. Coffee is the only product that gives the producers stability and a peaceful life. The Association helps the producers stop producing illegal products, giving more reasons to their associates to produce coffee so they can live calmly and sustainably."

The association's objective isn't to shame or exclude producers, but to give them better reasons to choose coffee. Training, education, business management, quality improvement, direct market access. Year by year, the balance shifts. Year by year, more farmers put their land and labour into coffee because they can see a future in it.

We're now in our fifth year working with this group, and we're proud to mark it as one of our most influential partnerships.

To create this blend, we take our caffeinated and marry it 50/50 with its decaffeinated counterpart. The decaf process happens in Colombia, where the coffee is sorted and steamed under low pressure to open the seeds' pores. It's then placed in a solution of water and ethyl acetate, a naturally occurring compound. The ethyl acetate bonds with the chlorogenic acids inside the seed, and over eight hours the tank is drained and refilled until caffeine is no longer detected. A final steam removes any remaining traces. Doing this at origin, shortly after harvest, captures more of the coffee's value in the producing country, therefore preserving more of its character in the cup.

The result is a blend that gives you exactly half the caffeine, but none of the compromise. Chocolate, caramel, and apricot notes with a syrupy, smooth. A coffee that works for the second cup, the late afternoon, the evening pour-over.

ETHICAL COFFEE SOURCING

Just like our approach to roasting and training, we source coffee in such a way that prioritises empowering people who are disadvantaged or disenfranchised.

Every sourcing decision is made intentionally in order to maximise the impact for the producers.
We focus these decisions around 3 main principles:

REHABILITATION

In line with our mission in the UK, we support the rehabilitation of coffee producers previously involved in conflict, crime or the drug trade. We’ve been working with a project in Colombia which supports farmers who were previously members of paramilitary groups, and want to move away from growing illegal plants for the drugs industry and instead produce coffee. This allows them to have a steady, sustainable income which provides for their family and creates stability within their community.

Sustainable Initiatives

Economic and environmental sustainability are important issues at every stage of the coffee supply chain.

We work with Caravela, who on top of paying farmers up front, have an on-the-ground team to work with farmers improving their farm yield and reduce carbon emissions.

We also work closely with Raw Material CIC, who reinvest all profits at origin.

Female Economic Empowerment

We support the promotion of female coffee producers to improve gender equality in the industry. In an industry where women do most of the labour but rarely hold positions of power, we want to help reset the balance. We’ve built a relationship with Patricia Coelho, a female producer in The Pinhal Region in Brazil, to create our house espresso blend, The Block. We now do a lot of business with Patrica, giving her the capital to invest in producing better and better coffee and thereby access the speciality market. 2023 marks our third year working with Patricia.
